To receive a Welding Supervisor certification, candidates must complete two examinations: Paper A and Paper B. Paper A covers Items 1 – 8 and Paper B covers Items 9 and 10 and includes specific variations that align with the requirements of AS 2214-2024 and AS 1796-2022 respectively.

Entry Requirements
For AS 2214-2024 (Structural Steel Welding), candidates seeking the welding supervisor’s certificate must demonstrate:
- Three years approved practical experience in fabrication engineering industry and successful completion of an approved course that includes –
- Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade
- Welders certification/ticket
- Welding inspection/supervision experience
- Three years approved experience in high quality welding to structural code standards.
For AS 1796-2022 (Pressure Vessels), candidates applying for the welding supervisor’s certificate (Certificate No. 10) must provide documentary evidence of meeting one of the following requirements:
- A welder’s certificate complying with this Standard, evidence of attending or having attended
a course of instruction for welding supervisors and not less than one year’s experience in the
welding of pressure equipment as defined in AS/NZS 1200 subsequent to gaining the welder’s
certificate. The course of instruction, predominantly theoretical in scope, shall be of at least 120
hours’ duration. - A welder’s certificate complying with this Standard and at least 2 years’ experience in the
welding of pressure equipment as defined in AS/NZS 1200 subsequent to gaining that
certificate. - A qualification in engineering, metallurgy or welding and at least three years’ experience
in welded fabrication, one year of which shall have included the construction of pressure
equipment as defined in AS/NZS 1200.
Verbal and written communication skills, as well as report writing proficiency, are also necessary for
candidates. It is recommended that individuals without pressure vessel welding experience pursue
the AS 2214-2019 Welding Supervisor Structural Steel Welding certification.
